Description:

A liquid admixture comprised of acrylic polymers and modifiers which when added to any portland cement mixture, promotes a substantial increase in adhesion of the mixture.

OCTOBLEN is used to aid in curing the new mortar mix, while substantially increasing flexural and tensile strengths. The resulting cement mortar will have an increased resistance to freeze-thaw stress, spalling, cracking, abrasion, dusting and impact. The workability of the OCTOBLEN modified mortar is improved, while prewetting and after-curing of the new surface is greatly reduced. The physical properties created by addition of OCTOBLEN are not reversible once cured, even in the presence of constant water. Therefore, OCTOBLEN may be used in any interior or exterior portland cement application.

Primarily used as an admixture to interlock the new mortar mix to itself and to the existing surface, it can be applied as a slurry bonding membrane between an old and new surface, where the new layer is less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) thickness.

Uses:

  • As a bonding agent – Substantially increases bond strength of new mortars

  • As an admixture –

    • Substantially increases flexural and tensile strengths

    • Adds greater durability

    • Greater resistance to freeze thaw cycles

    • Greater resistance to spalling, cracking, abrasion, dusting and impact

    • Greater chemical resistance

    • Aids in curing

INSTALLATION

Surface Preparation:

Surface to be treated must be cleaned of any film, scale, loose material, oils, grease, dust, dirt, laitance, efflorescence, oil-based curing membranes or form release agents, paint, unsound concrete and any other material that will prohibit bond. Surface preparation may be accomplished by sand blast, water blast, surface scarification, grinding or chemical methods.

On days when temperatures exceed 80ºF (27°C), the prepared surface should be thoroughly dampened (not saturated) with water. On cool days, prewetting is not required.

Mixing:

Mechanical mixing is recommended. Use an electric drill motor and mixing paddle or mortar mixer. For optimum results, OCTOBLEN should be used as the gauging liquid for cement slurries, overhead repairs and traffic bearing applications. For maximum bond of vertical patches and wall plasters, the gauging liquid should include at least 1 gallon (3.8 L) of OCTOBLEN for each 50 pounds (22.7 kg) of portland cement in the mixture. Always premix the gauging liquid before adding it to the premixed dry materials. Place an appropriate portion of the premixed gauging liquid in a clean mixing container, add measured powder and add balance of required liquid while mixing to bring to an application consistency.

Application:

As a Slurry: Neat OCTOBLEN may be spread over existing surfaces for bonding to concrete construction joints. For lighter toppings it is mixed with a portion of the mortar powder or straight portland cement to make a 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) bonding slurry coat or membrane to be scrubbed into the existing surface. Topping mixes should be placed while the slurry bond coat is moist. Construction joints must be placed immediately following the neat placement of OCTOBLEN.

As a Patch or Topping Admixture: Pack firmly and quickly without any more working force than is necessary. Mix only as much material as can be placed in 30 minutes (40 minutes in cool weather). Clean trowel or narrow metal straight edge (screed) the concrete surface frequently. When screeding large areas, keep build-up of material ahead of the screed and vibrate with short strokes. Finishing with a brush dipped in a mixture of equal parts water and OCTOBLEN will produce a smooth dense surface. Raking with a stiff brush before final set will produce a rough, non-slip surface.

With Cement Paints: Use OCTOBLEN when applying cement paints over previous cement coatings or over monolithic concrete to achieve lasting adhesion. OCTOBLEN will also aid cure and color uniformity, and eliminate the need for surface wetting.

Prepare liquid comprised of equal parts water and OCTOBLEN. Add powder to liquid while mixing. Bring to a heavy paste; allow to sit 20 to 30 minutes; thin to whipped cream consistency and apply material. Approximately 2 quarts (1.9 L) of OCTOBLEN per 25 lbs. (11.3 kg) of cement paint may be used. An alternate method to improve adhesion of a cementitious coating over a monolithic surface is to roll on a heavy slurry of OCTOBLEN and mortar mix prior to applying the mixture. MIXING POWDER DIRECTLY INTO THE OCTOBLEN PROVIDES THE BEST RESULTS.

As an Admixture in Coatings: Mix only as much material as can be troweled or sprayed in 1 hour.

Curing:

In cool, humid weather, OCTOBLEN modified mixes are self curing. When drying is rapid due to hot, fry air or forced ventilation, apply a moist cure for 48 hours for vertical applications, and for 4 days for traffic bearing areas. DO NOT USE SOLVENT BASED CURING COMPOUNDS.

Clean-up:

Cleanup must be done immediately due to high bonding characteristics of OCTOBLEN modified mortars. Clean equipment with water and a mild detergent.

Packaging:

OCTOBLEN is packaged 4 gallons (15.1 L) per case, in 5 gallon (18.9 L) pails and 55 gallon (208.2 L) drums. Larger bulk packaging is available and may be sized to meet our customers’ needs. Consult with IPA’s Engineering Department at 800-523-3834.

Shelf Life: One year

Limitations:

OCTOBLEN modified portland cement mixtures are more difficult to finish than straight water and powder mortar mixes. DO NOT apply solvent containing compounds or coatings over OCTOBLEN modified mixtures. DO NOT use with air-entraining cements. OCTOBLEN should not be applied at ambient substrate and air temperatures lower than 45°F (7°C).
